Help Dachshunds By Fostering Get Them Out of Shelters And Into Caring Homes.

Fostering Dachshunds is one of the most rewarding things I have ever had the pleasure of doing. Please concider fostering a Dachshund by contacting your local Dachshund Rescue Group. Help get Dachshunds out of shelters and into caring homes.

These lovely little babies can end up without a home for so many reasons. If they are lucky, one of Dachshund rescue groups around the country removes them from the shelter.

These wonderful groups need reliable and loving volunteers to take a Dachshund into their homes and look after them until they are ready for adoption.

Dachshund Rescue - my introduction

One sunny day I was out with Dachshund Luke - The day that started it all.

A few years ago, little Dachshund Luke and I were spending a lovely sunny day at a Dachshund meet. It was so cute to see him with other Dachshunds and I could tell he was enjoying himself - his tail would not stop wagging. Owners and Dachshunds were socializing and enjoying the company. Again, I started thinking about getting a second Dachshund.

When a member of DARE - a Dachshund rescue group mentioned that she fosters Dachshunds I was very interested. Maybe I could do this. I asked hundreds of questions and the kind lady was more than happy to answer them all.

I walked away with paperwork, went on line to research, and thought about it for a few weeks.

There is a lot of information available on all the Dachshund rescue sites and after reading these and a couple more phone calls, I was ready to sign the forms.

Thinking About Fostering A Dachshund?

To be a good foster volunteer, you need to be able to socialize and train your new charge making him adoptable. Do not over worry about this, it is just like having your own Dachshund but with lots of help. I have also written a book that show you how to easily How to housebreak a Dachshund - I works.

The rescue group that I volunteered for where very helpful in providing many guidelines and a contact person that I could call anytime for advice.

Just treat the new Dachshund like he is part of the family. It is surprising how fast they adapt to their new surroundings.

The length of time a foster Dachshund will stay in your home varies widely. Young puppies are in demand, so are adopted quicker than an older dog with heartworm. There are dedicated foster homes who take in Dachshunds that due to illness or age may stay with them for years.

You do of course have a certain say in which dogs you are willing to take.

If you do find yourself with one that really does not fit into your home, it may be possible to find him a more suitable foster home.

However, give them all a chance first; sometimes a dog that may seem snappy could just be upset and missing his home. Often with love and care, they settle down quickly

What did Dachshund Luke think of the foster dogs?

Dachshund Luke, our little love enjoyed the foster dogs and was willing to except them into his home. He did get a little protective with his toys but they always worked it out between them.

Sometimes Luke was the alpha dog in the group and other times he let a newbie take over.

We wanted the fosters to be part of our daily life so they shared our entire home with us.

Dachshund Luke is quite accepting of other dogs in his home but this is something you will have to consider if you already have a Dachshund other pets or children.

All members of your household must be happy to be part of this otherwise; it will not be a rewarding experience for you or the foster dogs.

Stop Dachshunds Peeing In Your House

One thing I noticed about the foster Dachshunds was that some of them were not fully housebroken. This is understandable in some cases since the poor little babies had been through a hard time and were scared. A lot would go back to being housebroken within a few days.

Some however had never been trained. Most likely this is why their owners surrendered them in the first place - because their dachshund was peeing in their house!

I have been asked so many times by either new Dachshund owners or owners of stubborn Dachshunds how to fully housebreak them.

At last I have put together an ebook just for Dachshunds and their owners. How To Housebreak A Dachshund

I am selling it for a really low introduction price and donating a portion to Dachshund Rescue groups.
